Our projects

The Dictionary 4 Life (UK edition) has helped promote Literacy amongst young children. The initiative has helped children develop their facility with the English language while promoting the Rotary International emphasis on Literacy.

The Organisation for Economic Development (OECD) defines functional literacy not as the ability to read and write but as “whether a person is able to understand and employ printed information in daily life, at home, at work and in the community”, 5.2million adults in the UK are functionally illiterate and are unlikely to be able to help their children with their homework.

This year, Watford Rotary club donated the dictionaries to the year 5s at Ascot Road Primary School Watford and Beechfield School, Watford. These two school were identified as having nearly 40% of their pupils as being EAL students (English as a second language). Therefore, we know that the dictionaries would be put to good use. The dictionaries are a gift to them for life to help them throughout their school life. We intend to donate some more dictionaries to two more schools in Watford next academic year.
